The mission of the DNR Division of Ecological Resources is to collect and link ecological information to wise resource decisions within Minnesota's communities to help citizens create a sustainable future.

The Sauk Rapids Area Office houses one staff person, Michael Lee, a Plant Ecologist/Botanist with the Minnesota County Biological Survey. More information on the Minnesota County Biological Survey can be found at: Minnesota County Biological Survey

The Plant Ecologist's current focus of work is native plant community and rare species surveys in Todd and Becker Counties. In the past, Mike has conducted surveys in all or portions of the following counties: Stearns, Benton, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Kanabec, Pine, Aitkin, Crow Wing, Kandiyohi, Wright, Sherburne, Wabasha, Fillmore, Dakota, Houston, Winona, Carlton, Lake, Cook.

In addition, another major current focus is contribution to a publication on native plant community classification in the Eastern Broadleaf Forest and Prairie Parkland Provinces in Minnesota, see: Ecological Classification System and Field Guide to the Native Plant Communities of Minnesota

Additional duties of the Sauk Rapids Plant Ecologist include providing ecological information and interpretation to citizens and local government units, writing reports on significant natural areas (i.e. Scientific and Natural Areas, State Parks, Federal Research Natural Areas), participation on DNR interdisciplinary teams, and preparation of botanical specimens for preservation at the Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota.
