The Aquatic Invertebrate Biology Laboratory collects and analyzes aquatic invertebrates (crayfish, aquatic insects such as dragonflies, mayflies and others, zooplankton) from lakes and streams throughout the state.

The program has two primary goals:

  • to expand our knowledge of the distribution, abundance and role that these aquatic invertebrates play in the state's waters, and
  • to provide technical assistance for analysis and protection of these communities.

Many agencies throughout North America are using aquatic insects to help look at water quality. By examining the numbers and kinds of insects collected, we can assess water quality and stream health. We have been assisting in the development of biological monitoring for the DNR as well as other state agencies and citizen groups. Staff from the Laboratory help with collection of samples, identification of invertebrates and helping citizen groups by training teachers and students to identify aquatic insects.

Other work in the lab includes

  • processing samples collected by DNR staff and other agencies;
  • working with other agencies to examine concerns such as dragonfly distribution and potential mine drainage impacts on aquatic invertebrates;
  • providing technical expertise in zooplankton community dynamics, sampling and analysis;
  • assessment of how mosquito and blackfly control operations impact the invertebrate communities in natural waters;
  • coordination of the Department's activities on invasive aquatic invertebrates, such as zebra mussels or spiny water fleas; and
  • providing technical information on these invasive species to Department staff and other concerned people in the state.
