Plant Ecologists conduct surveys of native plant communities and evaluate sites with native vegetation.
Botanists conduct surveys for rare plant species within targeted counties or ecological units.
Border Lakes Subsection: Includes portions of Cook, Lake, St. Louis, and Koochiching counties. Subsections are units within the DNR's Ecological Classification System that are defined using glacial deposition processes, surface bedrock formations, local climate, topographic relief, and the distribution of plants, especially trees.
Nashwauk Uplands Subsection: Includes portions of St. Louis and Itasca counties.
South Central counties: Dodge, Faribault, Freeborn, Mower, Steele, and Waseca counties.
Southwest counties: Cottonwood, Jackson, Lyon, and Martin counties, as well as portions of Murray County that are in the Des Moines drainage, and portions of Nobles County that are in the Des Moines and Little Sioux drainages.
Zoologists conduct surveys for rare animals within targeted counties or ecological units; animal groups (and the specialists that work with them) include mammals (mammalogists), birds (ornithologists), amphibians and reptiles (herpetologists), fishes (ichthyologists), and insects (entomologists).
