A position located in our Lake City office has come to serve two roles.
First and foremost it serves as a biological resource specialist engaged in numerous Mississippi River issues. In the past year the position has participated in the Mississippi River navigation channel maintenance plan review, the federal Upper Mississippi River Environmental Management Program, the Mississippi River AEA (adaptive environmental assessment) development to address long-term ecological sustainability on the river, and many local information/education activities concerning Mississippi River ecology and issues.
In addition, the position has served an increasingly important role as the Department's technical specialist on native mussels. Survey work has been conducted in several watersheds throughout the state, an LCMR program to conduct mussel surveys statewide began in July, 1999, and an initial assessment of zebra mussel populations and their impacts on native mussels in Lake Pepin (a wide portion of the Mississippi River) has been completed.
