Where to go: You do not have to go far to find beautiful fall color at the park. Park in the main parking lot, and begin your hike in any direction. Take the campground road to see still green understory, or take a bluff hike to see the maples popping in the distance.
What you'll see: "It is a truly astonishing site when every tree in a forest becomes individual." from the book A walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.
That is exactly how you feel at Beaver Creek Valley right now. As you walk through the park you notice trees in all their fall color you may have never taken note of before, and only to get better in the next few weeks. Maple canopies are popping out from the bluffs in corals and oranges. Ashes, Cottonwood, and Elms are beginning to drop their honey colored leaves. Some areas in the park, however, are still very dark green because the Oaks and understory are still hoping for a bit more summer.
Also of interest: Although October ends the fall fishing season in the park, there is still plenty to do. Take a hike on any of the bluff overlooks, check the stream for aquatic insects, play volleyball in the sand, or check out one of our naturalist programs.
Last updated: October 2, 2013Can’t decide between a one-day or year-round park permit? The DNR has a special offer that can help. Start by purchasing a one-day permit for $5 and visit as many state parks as possible. After visiting the state parks, trade in the one-day permit by the end of that day and get $5 off the purchase of a year-round permit. Year-round permits, which cost $25, provide unlimited access to all 76 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for a full year from the month of purchase.
