Where to go: Head to the ridge tops for views of the crimson and orange maple foliage. Yellow Birch Trail is vibrant right now with birches and aspens at peak color.
What you'll see: Situated inland, this park is further ahead in color change than nearby Tettegouche. The yellow leaves of aspen and birch are at peak, and reds and oranges of the maples are just passing their peak.
Also of interest: Northern Flickers can be seen taking wing from roadsides as they migrate southwards in loose flocks. Look for flashes of yellow from the underside of their wings and a large white splotch at the base of their tails as these conspicuous birds take flight.
Last updated: October 3, 2013Can’t decide between a one-day or year-round park permit? The DNR has a special offer that can help. Start by purchasing a one-day permit for $5 and visit as many state parks as possible. After visiting the state parks, trade in the one-day permit by the end of that day and get $5 off the purchase of a year-round permit. Year-round permits, which cost $25, provide unlimited access to all 76 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for a full year from the month of purchase.
