Where to go: A hike on the south side trails will give you a glimpse of what color remains. The Big Woods Trail has been holding onto some colors with its midlevel leaves, another hot spot is Fawn trail with nice shades of yellows showing.
What you'll see: The Oaks are still showing some burnt red and oranges near the Visitor Center. A lot of the trees along the park tree line have lost their leaves for the season. Colorful leaves blanket the trails, and wildlife has been seen busily getting ready for colder weather.
Also of interest: What a perfect time of year to visit! This weekend is the Annual Big Woods Run in the park. The run starts at 9:00am; Hikers should be aware that runners will be sharing the trails at this time. Whether you are looking to take a tranquil hike amidst the fall backdrop or spend a peaceful night or two camping beneath the trees with owls and coyotes singing you to sleep. You will find a wonderful fall experience here, and we look forward to your visit. CAMPER ALERT: Campground AND Picnic Shelter water will be turned off for the season on October 22nd. Water will still be available in the Visitor Center during business hours.
Last updated: October 10, 2012Can’t decide between a one-day or year-round park permit? The DNR has a special offer that can help. Start by purchasing a one-day permit for $5 and visit as many state parks as possible. After visiting the state parks, trade in the one-day permit by the end of that day and get $5 off the purchase of a year-round permit. Year-round permits, which cost $25, provide unlimited access to all 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for a full year from the month of purchase.
