Where to go: Hike through the beautiful pine and hardwood stands of Tell Lake trail during fall color for views of maple, oak, basswood, birch and white pine. The historic Chase Point trail offers hikers beautiful lakescapes as they transcend down an esker left behind from the glaciers.
What you'll see: Colors are changing quickly now and a majority of the forest stand is showing color. The high bush cranberries and rose hips are ripened.Dogwood and arrowwood are deep maroon while sumac are a bright red color. The maples are showing colors of yellow, red and orange. Birch, basswoods and black ash are yellow with some ash already bare. The white pines are nearing their end stage of needle shedding and now have a golden look, white cedar seed are golden. Quaking and bigtooth aspen are golden yellow with only a few slight green. With the wind and rain Saturday some of the trees are dropping leaves.
Also of interest: Remember to watch the skies as you're hiking a trail or paddling across the lake canadian geese and ducks are heading south. Trumpeter swans have been seen on Coon and Sandwick lakes and loons are still around. Ruffed and spruce grouse have been hanging around the campground and day use areas.
