Where to go: Hike the Big Bog Boardwalk or canoe the Tamarac River. Climb the 100' fire tower next to the Visitor Center for a spectacular view of Upper Red Lake and miles of fall colors!
What you'll see: The tamarack trees along the boardwalk and Hwy 72 are turning. They are the only coniferous trees that shed their needles every year. In the process, they turn vibrant shades of orange.
Also of interest: The snow and high winds caused the majority of the leaves to come down. There are still a few left to enjoy!
Last updated: October 10, 2012Can’t decide between a one-day or year-round park permit? The DNR has a special offer that can help. Start by purchasing a one-day permit for $5 and visit as many state parks as possible. After visiting the state parks, trade in the one-day permit by the end of that day and get $5 off the purchase of a year-round permit. Year-round permits, which cost $25, provide unlimited access to all 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for a full year from the month of purchase.
