Forest tent caterpillar
This summer saw the most serious FTC defoliation in northern Beltrami County since 1954. Yet, the expected defoliation predicted for areas in and around Bemidji never seemed to materialize this summer. FTC moths were noticed during the later part of the week of July 8th in Region 1. Aspens, birch, and other hardwoods are now refoliating, while humans are back to their usual activities of working, vacationing, and writing articles about the misgivings of their government and economic leaders. Also noticed is the slow disappearance of the stench of rotted FTC larvae from the back country roads in the heavily defoliated areas, about the same time the deer flies and mosquitos are driving us out of the swamplands and into the hills of Minnesota.
