Check those white pine budcaps
They may be an excellent microclimate for aphid and scale insects. Several field foresters working with private landowners have reported the presence of sucking insects underneath old budcaps that have not fallen off after new shoot elongation in the spring. They are monitoring new shoot development to see if and how much mortality occurs. If you find insects in bud cap areas, please take some samples and get them to the Forest Ecosystem Health Specialists for identification.
