Tweety bird and the politically correct tree

Due to an increasing demand for white pine seedlings, the Badoura Nursery staff conducted a spring sowing of artificially stratified seed. Normally, white pine is sown in the fall and it germinates in May after natural stratification. This year, a June sowing was attempted to produce 200,000 seedlings for the year 2000 shipping season. In spite of torrential rains, germination on July 3rd was excellent and initial bed densities were high. A local flock of goldfinches, however, took advantage of this unusual food source and ate off all the untreated seed heads over the 4th of July holiday. A nice try and an A for effort; but chalk one up for the birds. Alfred Hitchcock would be proud!
