Spruce budworm

In 1997, its forty-fourth year of outbreak, spruce budworms defoliated 257,000 acres of balsam fir and white spruce forests in Minnesota. This is an increase of nearly 50,000 acres compared to last year, which was a "low" year. The population center seems to be in northern St. Louis County and over the years, the center has slowly moved here from Cook and Lake Counties.
