Spruce budworm

Spruce budworm appears to be on the rebound. From a low of less than 20,000 acres in 2001 it increased to 90,000 acres of defoliation in 2002. This year the budworm completed its feeding as of the last week of June and the moth flight is underway. The budworm is centered in northwestern St Louis County and southeastern Koochiching but defoliated stands can be found in other locations as well such as south of Jacobsen in Aitkin Co. The aerial survey is currently underway.
