Metro storm damage reports

Gary Johnson, University of Minnesota, reviewed preliminary results of a survey of tree damage from recent storms in the Metro Region. Additional data is being collected. These "autopsy reports" represent 190 trees:

Tree failure (entire tree down) represented 60% Species : Colorado blue spruce = 37%, green ash = 13.5%, littleleaf linden = 10%. Location: 29% of the failures occurred in boulevards.

Stem failure ( broke at stem) represented 5.3% with 80% of those associated with stem decay. Leader/ branch failure represented 34.7%: Species: American elm = 24%, hackberry = 18%, green ash = 17% and Norway maple = 15%. Of these, 64% were codominant leaders and 44% were decayed unions.
