Spring has finally given way to summer. Finally. While the delayed budbreak has at long last arrived, many trees are still struggling to develop leaves. No single species is showing these problems more than green ash. Many tree have yet to break dormancy and put on leaves. Trees with tight, green buds are still quite alive. Branches are supple and well hydrated and a scratch on the bark easily produces the bright green of chlorophyl. Be patient. Do not remove any tree that has not broken dormancy until at least July 1. We have often seen these "dead" trees break bud in July, elongate shoots, and proceed with a normal, if not abbreviated, growing season. Patience. Patience. Patience. It was quite a winter.
