Spring tail flip at the Nursery / We need more doe permits!!!

The biggest pest at both nurseries this spring was deer! The light snow cover and early melt off set up ideal conditions for the big chewers to render unshippable white cedar, tamarack and pine stock. They also enjoyed heavily fertilized oak seedlings and various shrubs ( after all we are promoting wildlife ), but in most cases they left shippable size tops. In the past, fencing has been employed at both nurseries with acceptable, although not perfect, control. This year we fenced, but the critters found other species to their liking. This year was the first time damage thresholds were exceeded at Badoura and direct control was needed at General Andrews. We will continue to document economic losses and work with Wildlife to expand and improve our integrated pest management of the noble whitetail, alias tree chewer and stealer of profits!
