While ground truthing the 1997 aerial surveys throughout Region 1, three locations had notable porcupine damage. A fifteen year old red pine plantation in S4-T148N-R35W, in Beltrami County, and a mixed stand of mature pine and hardwoods in S16-T141N-R36W in Becker County were especially hard hit.
Of particular interest is an area of ten to twenty acres south of Shevlin in Clearwater County that has top-kill on twenty year old aspen regeneration uniformly scattered throughout the stands giving one the impression the entire stand had its canopy scorched. Two plots were taken with approximately five to ten percent of the trees top-killed. That kind of mortality in aspen due to porcupine feeding is kind of unusual.
