Public Review of Stand Selection Step

This phase of the North Shore Area Subsections Forest Resource Management Plan provides the list of forest stands (a mapped area consisting of trees similar in species composition, age, and size) that will be field evaluated and potentially treated over the 10-year planning period (2005 - 2014).

The documents also include an estimate of the types and miles of new road access needed to implement the plan, and DNR responses to public comments received on the Strategic Direction Document and the revisions to that document.

The 10-Year Stand Selection Results and New Access Needs Document was developed by a DNR team of resource professionals from the divisions of Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, and Ecological Resources. Stands were selected for treatment to implement the strategic direction developed in a prior step of the planning process (North Shore SFRMP Strategic Direction Document, released January 2005 for public review). Together, the 10-Year Stand Selection Results and New Access Needs and the Strategic Direction documents will direct forest vegetation management on 207,000 acres of state forest land administered in these subsections by the DNR divisions of Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, and Trails and Waterways. These state lands comprise 9 percent of the 2.4 million acres in the three subsections.

The draft 10-Year Stand Selection Results & New Access Needs Document has gone through department review. Now the DNR extends an invitation to you to review and comment on the results of stand selection, the estimate of new road access needs, and individual stands selected for field evaluations and possible treatment.
