Remediation Fund Grant Program

Note: There is no funding currently available for remediation fund grants. However, the program remains in place in the event that there is funding available in the future.

Program Purpose: To acquire, protect and restore natural resources, compensating the State of Minnesota for damage to resources from the release of hazardous substances from closed landfills.

Eligible applicants: Cities, counties,townships and DNR Divisions.

Eligible Projects:

  • Fee title acquisition of natural areas
  • Ecological restoration leading to the establishment or maintenance of native plant communities

Priority is given to projects that best meet established program criteria (refer to the ranking criteria included in the program manual This is a PDF file. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to download it..)

Program funding: Project proposals must have a total grant request of at least $30,000 and no more than $500,000. Non-state matching funds are not required but applications with a strong local commitment through matching funds will be ranked higher than similar projects with no matching funds.

Grant awards
The Department of Natural Resources will review and rank applications during the spring of 2009. Preliminary grant awards will be announced in the summer of 2009.

Project period
Projects cannot begin until all requested final documentation has been submitted and an agreement between the applicant and the state has been signed. Project start dates may be in the fall of 2009 or later, depending on the funding available and the project ranking. Funded projects must begin promptly after an agreement has been signed. All work must be completed no later than December 31, 2011.

To receive an application, please submit an Application Request Form. We recommend that the Application Request Form be submitted no later than January 31, 2009. The completed application is due on March 31, 2009.
