Project Learning Tree grants
What is it?
GreenSchools provides a blueprint for educators, students, environmental and health advocates, school board members, parents, and interested community members to teach, learn, and engage together in creating a more green and healthy learning environment at their school. It combines environmental education, service learning and leadership opportunities for students to help turn their school into a model "green" school.
Why?
Two in 10 people who live in the United States—55 million children, teachers, administrators, nurses, and janitors—spend their days in K?12 schools. Schools can, and should, provide a healthy environment for students and staff, promote ecological sustainability, reduce consumption, and teach students to be environmental stewards of their communities and of the earth and its resources.
Who are the partners?
PLT, USDA Forest Service, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

GreenSchools save money!
For six weeks, five Green Teams at Low Country Prep (South Carolina) collected schoolwide data relating to the GreenSchools! Investigations. For example, students measured lumens in various light sources and delamping seemed possible to them. The team changed all 600 bulbs in the school to CFLs to save more than $5,000 per year! They also discovered that their school's more than 55 computers were left on 24/7, costing their school $216 per computer per year. One team member found a "shutdown and boot" timer online that's now been installed on each computer.
