Zone 21

BWCAW boundary status: open status: closed

2012 status: open.

Description: This zone is approximately 320 square miles in size and is outside the BWCAW. This zone has road access scattered throughout. Roads in this zone vary from paved all season roads to logging roads that offer foot access only. This zone contains a mix of private, public and corporate ownership and hunters need to be aware of whose land they are on. Some corporate lands and roads are closed to public access in and around active mining areas. A good map and compass with the skills to use both will be a tremendous asset.

Topography: The terrain in this zone is generally flat to somewhat rolling.

Physical fitness level: Hunters need to be aware that moose hunting can be physically demanding requiring heavy lifting and endurance. Hunters need to know their fitness level.

ATV Regulations: Hunters need to be aware of ATV regulations that are in place on different land ownerships. Big game retrieval is generally allowed on state and county lands. Please check with the U.S. Forest Service regarding ATV use on federal land.

Legal Description: Subp. 20. Moose Zone 21. Moose Zone 21 consists of that portion of the state lying within the following described boundary: Beginning at the junction of State Trunk Hwy (STH) 169 and STH 135; thence northeasterly on STH 169 to the intersection with County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 16; thence southerly and easterly on CSAH 16 to the Silver Rapids bridge; thence along the westerly and southerly shore of Farm Lake to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) border; thence southerly along the BWCA border to the South Kawishiwi River; thence southerly along the easterly shoreline of said river to Birch Lake; thence along the easterly shoreline of Birch Lake to Forest Road (FR) 178; thence southerly along FR 178 to FR 424; thence westerly along FR 424 to FR 1431; thence southerly along FR 1431 to FR 112; thence southerly along FR 112 to FR 113; thence southerly along FR 113 to the Cliffs Erie Railroad; thence westerly along said railroad to the intersection with the Dunka Spur of the Cliffs Erie Railroad in Section 11, Township 59 North, Range 13 West; thence easterly and northerly along said railroad spur to CSAH 623; thence northerly and westerly along CSAH 623 to CSAH 70; thence westerly along CSAH 70 to CSAH 21; thence westerly on CSAH 21 to CSAH 26; thence westerly and northerly on CSAH 26 to STH 135; thence northerly on STH 135 to the point of beginning.
