Description: This zone is approximately 156 square miles in size and is entirely outside the BWCAW. The southern portion of this zone contains a large bog with limited and difficult access. This zone has road access scattered throughout the zone. Roads in this zone vary from paved all season roads to logging roads that offer foot access only. This zone is predominately in public ownership with some private land. Hunters need to be aware of whose land they are on. A good map and compass with the skills to use both will be a tremendous asset.
Topography: The terrain in this zone is generally flat to somewhat rolling.
Physical fitness level: Hunters need to be aware that moose hunting can be physically demanding requiring heavy lifting and endurance. Hunters need to know their fitness level.
ATV Regulations: Hunters need to be aware of ATV regulations that are in place on different land ownerships. Big game retrieval is generally allowed on state and county lands. Please check with the U.S. Forest Service regarding ATV use on federal land.
Legal Description: Subp. 21. Moose Zone 22. Moose Zone 22 consists of that portion of the state lying within the following described boundary: Beginning at the junction of State Trunk Hwy (STH) 1 and County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 2; thence southerly on CSAH 2 to the Cliffs Erie Railroad; thence westerly along said railroad to the intersection with the Northshore Mining Company Railroad; thence northerly along said railroad to FR 113; thence northerly along FR 113 to FR 112; thence northerly along FR 112 to FR 1431; thence northerly along FR 1431 to FR 424; thence easterly along FR 424 to FR 178; thence northerly along FR 178 to Birch Lake; thence northerly along the easterly shoreline of Birch Lake to the South Kawishiwi River; thence along the easterly shoreline of said river to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) border; thence southerly and easterly along the BWCA border to the Snake River; thence southerly along said river to FR 377; thence westerly along FR 377 to STH 1; thence southerly along STH 1 to the point of beginning.
