BWCAW boundary status: open status: closed

2012 status: open.

Description: This zone is approximately 141 square miles in size, with approximately 15 square miles (11%) of the north portion of the zone being within the BWCAW. Landownership is primarily Federal and State, however, scattered privately owned parcels are found within the zone. Hunters need to be aware of whose land they are on and follow appropriate regulations.

Topography: The terrain in this zone is variable ranging from rolling to moderately steep. Roads vary from unpaved all-season roads to logging roads which may be open to foot travel only.

Physical fitness level: Moderate. Hunters need to be aware that moose hunting can be physically demanding requiring heavy lifting and endurance. Hunters need to be aware of their fitness level and need to be prepared for foot travel.

ATV Regulations: Hunters should be aware that ATV regulations vary with land ownership. Most of the zone is Superior National Forest land where cross country travel on ATVs is prohibited and there is no exception for big game retrieval. A portion of the zone is state land where cross country travel is prohibited but big game retrieval is generally allowed by exception.

Legal Description: Subp. 23. Moose Zone 24. Moose Zone 24 consists of that portion of the state lying within the following described boundary: Beginning at the junction of Forest Road (FR) 377 and the Island River; thence northerly along said river to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) border; thence northerly and easterly along said border to Hog Creek; thence upstream in a northeasterly direction along said creek to FR 354; thence southerly along FR 354 to County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 7; thence southerly along CSAH 7 to FR 172; thence westerly along FR 172 to FR 369; thence northerly along FR 369 to FR 373; thence northwesterly along FR 373 to FR 377; thence northeasterly along FR 377 to the point of beginning.
