Description: Moose Zone 27 lies entirely within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness --Trout Lake Unit-- administered by the U.S. Forest Service. Non-Motorized Access only. Access is generally by water only. This large unit stretches 15 miles by 12 miles on the north side of Lake Vermilion and is 185 square miles in size.
Topography: Zone 27 consisits of rolling terrain with numerous lakes, streams, and drainages.
Physical fitness level: Moderate to High. This unit demands the physical ability to pack and portage 300-600 pounds of meat and antler out of the wilderness. Portages can be rugged.
Blowdown information: 30-50% of the area was impacted by the 1999 blowdown. Navigation is difficult in some areas
ATV Regulations: ATVs are prohibited.
Restrictions: Outboard motors are restricted to 25 horsepower or less on Trout Lake.
Legal Description: Subp. 24b. Moose Zone 27. Moose Zone 27 consists of that portion of the state lying within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Trout Lake Unit northeast of Lake Vermilion.
Hunters are required to obtain necessary permits for BWCAW travel.
