Description: Moose Zone 30 straddles the St. Louis and Lake County line southeast of Hoyt Lakes. The zone is 78% publicly owned. Zone 30 is 279 mi.2 (178,393 acres) in size. State Forest Land 22,896 acres (13%) State Scientific and Natural Area 1,280 acres (< 1%) County tax forfeit 21,455 acres (12%) USFS 95,160 acres (53%).

Topography: The dominant feature of the zone is wetlands and drainages separated by moderately rolling hills and ridges. By far the most common wetland type is peat bog. Lakes make up about 3% of the area, wetlands 42%, of which 75% are bogs. 55% of the zone is upland forest that is relatively evenly separated by wetlands. Access between uplands is often complicated by wetlands that can't be crossed by motorized vehicles except by existing roads.

Physical fitness level: Moderate. Hunters should be prepared to pack out moose meat by ATV or pack board in more remote areas.

ATV Regulations: ATVs are generally allowed for retrieval of big game on state and county lands. Please check with the U.S. Forest Service regarding ATV use on federal land.

Legal Description: Subp. 26. Moose Zone 30. Moose Zone 30 consists of that portion of the state lying within the following described boundary: Beginning at the intersection of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 2, Lake County and Forest Road (FR) 122; thence along FR 122 to CSAH 44, St. Louis County; thence along CSAH 44 to CSAH 16, St. Louis County; thence along CSAH 16 to the Soudan Branch of the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway Company (DM&>IR); thence along said railroad to Wyman Creek; thence along Wyman Creek to the Erie Mining Company railroad in Section 17, T. 59N, R. 14W; thence eastward along said railroad to CSAH 2, Lake County; thence along CSAH 2 to the point of beginning.
