Zone 31

2012 status: open.

Description: This zone is approximately 299 square miles and is composed of County, Federal, State, and private ownerships. This zone is entirely outside the BWCAW. The North Shore State Trail travels through the southern portion of the zone

Topography: Terrain ranges from relatively flat to moderately rolling with some relatively steep areas. Lakes, streams, and drainages present throughout the zone. The east, north, south, and west perimeter roads are paved all season roads. Interior roads consist of unpaved Forest roads that provide for car/truck access and unpaved logging roads that may be open to foot travel only.

Physical fitness level: Moderate. Hunters need to be aware that moose hunting can be physically demanding requiring heavy lifting and endurance. Interior roads are limited. Hunters need to be aware of their fitness level and should be prepared for foot travel.

ATV Regulations: Hunters should be aware that ATV regulations vary with land ownership. Most of the zone is Superior National Forest land where cross country travel on ATVs is prohibited and there is no exception for big game retrieval. A portion of the zone is state land where cross country travel is prohibited but big game retrieval is generally allowed by exception. Some lands in the zone are private where permission to travel must be obtained.

Legal Description: Subp. 27. Moose Zone 31. Moose Zone 31 consists of that portion of the state lying within the following described boundary: Beginning at the intersection of State Trunk Highway (STH) 1 and County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 4, Lake county; thence in a southwesterly direction along CSAH 4 to CSAH 3, Lake county; thence along CSAH 3 to Silver Creek Township Road (TR) 24 (Alger Grade); thence along TR 24 to CSAH 2, Lake county; thence along CSAH 2 to Forest Road (FR) 104; thence along FR 104 to FR 102; thence along FR 102 to the Erie Mining Company railroad; thence along the Erie Mining Company railroad to STH 1; thence along STH 1 to the point of beginning.
