Zone 33

BWCAW boundary status: open status: closed

2012 status: open.

Description: Moose Zone 33 is a corridor of land outside the BWCAW that straddles the Echo Trail in Northern St. Louis County northwest of Ely. It is approximately 105 square miles in size. The zone is predominately publicly owned by the State and the U.S. Forest Service. Access is generally good via forest roads and logging access trails.

Topography: Zone 33 consits of flat to moderate rolling hills. This zone has many large clearcuts and regenerating cutovers.

Physical fitness level: Low to Moderate. Hunters should be prepared to pack out moose meat by ATV or pack board in more remote areas.

Blowdown information: 10 to 20% of the area was affected by the 1999 blowdown.

ATV Regulations: On state and county land, ATVs are generally allowed for retrieval of big game. Please check with the U.S. Forest Service regarding ATV use on federal land.

Legal Description: Subp. 29. Moose Zone 33. Moose Zone 33 consists of that portion of the state lying within the following described boundary: Beginning at the junction of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 116 and Forest Road (FR) 200; thence in a southerly direction along Forest Road 200 to Hilda Creek; thence upstream in an easterly and southerly direction to the intersection with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) boundary; thence following the BWCA boundary in an easterly, northerly and southerly direction to where it intersects Slim Creek; thence northeasterly along Slim Creek to Hunch Lake; thence across Hunch Lake; thence continuing northeasterly along Spring Creek to the BWCA line north of CSAH 116; thence follow said boundary back in a northerly and westerly direction to an unnamed creek in the northeast quarter of Section 23, Township 66 North, Range 16 West; thence follow said flowage westerly to Forest Road (FR) 199; thence follow FR 199 southerly to CSAH 116 ; thence follow CSAH 116 to the point of beginning.
