Description: Moose Zone 34 is entirely outside the BWCAW at the northwest edge of the primary moose range in Northeast Minnesota. It is approximately 173 square miles in size. The zone is predominately publicly owned by the US Forest Service interspersed with lesser amounts of State and County lands, however, there are areas where land ownership is predominately private. Access is generally good via forest roads, logging access trails, or water routes.
Topography: Zone 34 consists of flat to moderately rolling hills with occasional steep slopes. This zone has some clearcuts and regenerating cutovers, but much of the vegetation is approaching maturity or is already mature to over-mature.
Physical fitness level: Low to Moderate. Hunters should be prepared to pack out moose meat by pack board, canoe, or ATV, where permitted, in more remote areas
Blowdown information: Very little of the zone was affected by the 1999 Blowdown.
ATV Regulations: On State and County lands, ATVs are generally allowed for retrieval of big game. Please check with the U.S. Forest Service regarding ATV use on federal land.
