Detail Report

Zone 74

BWCAW boundary status: open status: closed

2012 status: open.

Description: This zone is 77 square miles in size and is entirely outside the BWCAW. The roads vary from paved all-season roads to rough logging roads. Special Note regarding Zone 74: Hunters should be aware that this zone has several resorts and high tourist traffic, much of it focused on moose viewing. Hunters need to present their sport in the best manner. This can be accomplished by exhibiting the highest levels of hunting skill, knowledge and ability while hunting areas remote from roads, resorts and private cabins. Land ownership in this zone is a mix of Superior National Forest, state, and private. Hunters need to be aware of whose land they are on. Camping, ATV travel and other recreational pursuits are regulated by the Superior National Forest and DNR on public lands. Most hunters opt to hunt on the uplands, but opportunities to hunt on the numerous lakes exist.

Topography: The terrain varies from flat to rolling and steep.

Physical fitness level: Moderate. Hunters need to be aware of their fitness level because moose hunting can be physically demanding and require heavy lifting and endurance.

ATV Regulations: Hunters should be aware that ATV regulations vary with land ownership. Most of the zone is Superior National Forest land where cross country travel on ATVs is prohibited and there is no exception for big game retrieval. A portion of the zone is state land where cross country travel is prohibited but big game retrieval is generally allowed by exception. Some lands in the zone are private where permission to travel must be obtained.
