Moose Hunting Zones

Hunter choice option

Participants in this fall's bulls-only moose hunt can chose to have their licenses refunded and reinstated for a future hunt if the Pagami Creek fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) has impacted or limited access to the zone in which they are authorized to hunt.

If a hunter elects to receive a refund and have the license reinstated for a future hunt in the same area, he or she must call 651-259-5220 by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, and request the refund.

Moose hunting zones affected by this decision are zones 20, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 61, 62, 63, 64, 77, and 80. Minnesota DNR information about each zone is available by clicking on the map below.

Access the most up-to-date map directly from the U.S. Forest Service

Access the most up-to-date information directly from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) at http://fs.usda.gov/superior. Scroll about halfway down the page to view the direct USFS links to a list of closed BWCAW entry points, forest roads and a large detailed and downloadable map showing the burn perimeter and the closed areas of the BWCAW and Superior National Forest.

Additional moose zones could be added if the Pagami Creek fire or related closings by the USFS prevent access. Check this page regularly for updates.

Choose wisely

Up-to-date information about the fire, including the most up-to-date access closures, is available from the USFS at http://inciweb.org/incident/2534/. The situation is changing rapidly so please use this information to make an informed decision about access because if you retain your license, it will count as your once-in-a-lifetime moose hunting opportunity.

Minnesota DNR neither controls the access points nor makes the determination as to whether access points are open or closed; thus, DNR cannot ensure access to areas within your hunting zone.

If a hunter elects to hunt, no further action by the hunter is required other than having his or her license validated at an orientation session.

If hunters in fire-impacted moose zones elect not to hunt this year, DNR will refund the license cost and reinstate the license for the 2012 or a future hunt. This decision affects the entire party. If a hunter elects to receive a refund and have the license reinstated for a future hunt in the same area, he or she must call 651-259-5220 by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, and request the refund.

At that time the 2011 license will be voided and cannot be used. To receive the refund and reinstatement, hunters must return the 2011 moose license to the DNR.

Future licenses

If a 2011 moose hunting party is issued a future license, it will be based on license availability, issued in the same zone and allow the same individuals in the 2011 party to hunt.
