Rewards and challenges...

Tim can think of a lot of rewards of the job, but probably the most important is having a positive influence on members of the public and having the opportunity to educate them on aquatic ecosystems. "We have daily contact with the public, so we get daily feedback." It's important to Tim and the rest of the staff to hear from the community.

Another reward for Tim is being able to give another employee or intern an opportunity to grow and develop in a career. It's very apparent that Tim really enjoys his job, so it's important to him to allow others the same opportunity to work in a career that they love.

Successfully managing a fishery also gives Tim a big sense of accomplishment. Obviously, good fishing keeps the customer happy, which leads to the challenge of providing good angling and protecting the environment. "Fisheries management is an art that you apply science to, which in itself is a challenge," explains Tim. "Providing a successful fishery to the public is kind of a "hit or miss" type of a thing. There's no exact recipe for it."

Probably the biggest challenge, however, is time management. "There are too many things that we want to do, too many things that we have to do, and too little time to do either of them," explains Tim. "I?ve put in over 300 hours of uncompensated time since January, but I don?t mind doing it, because it benefits the public and the fish. I love what I?m doing, and I feel like I?ve got such a great job, I owe it to the people to get the job done right. So, if it takes me longer, then it's OK. My philosophy is that I worked my tail off on my first day on the job, and I intend to do that until my last day!"
