BACKGROUND: Tim has been with the DNR for 22 years, and has spent 32 years in the fish and wildlife field, starting as a seasonal employee with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  After receiving his B.A. in Fisheries Biology, Tim began his career with the DNR as a Wildlife Technician.   More....  

ABOUT THE AREA OFFICE: The Brainerd Area Fisheries office includes an Assistant Area Manager, an office specialist, three other fisheries specialists, and three fisheries technicians. Tim, as Area Fisheries Supervisor, oversees the activities of the Brainerd office.   More.... 

TYPICAL DAY: Even though the projects that Tim and his staff work on are anything but "typical", Tim does have some regularity in the way his day is structured.   More... 

BUSY TIME: "We're actually busy all year round," Tim explains, "but everything tends to come together in the spring."  Spring brings spawning runs for both northern pike and walleyes.  Electrofishing is also a priority in the spring. More... 

SPECIAL PROJECTS: The Fisheries office conducts a variety projects, including lake reclamation projects, habitat improvement, the walleye spawn take in the spring, lake and stream surveys during the summer, and environmental reviews during the winter months.   More...

REWARDS & CHALLENGES: Tim's biggest reward is having the opportunity to educate the public on aquatic ecosystems, and being able to give a another staff member the opportunity to grow and develop in a career.  More.... 

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND INTERNSHIPS: Tim and his staff educate the public about their work through presentations to elementary schools, high schools, colleges, sports clubs, and civic groups.  Tim is also invited to do local radio shows, writes newspaper articles, and teaches at an area college.  All this, in addition to providing summer college internships, provides Tim and the rest of the Fisheries office staff many opportunities to share their knowledge.
