Privately Stocked Fish
---
* indicates privately stocked fish. Private stocking includes fish purchased by the DNR for stocking and fish purchased and stocked by private citizens and sporting groups.
Stocking Fish Sizes
---
Fry - Newly hatched fish that are ready to be stocked usually called "swim-ups". Walleye fry are 1/3 of an inch or around 8 mm.
Fingerling - Fingerlings are one to six months old and can range from a size of one to twelve inches depending on the species. Walleye fingerlings range from three to eight inches each fall.
Yearling - Yearling fish are at least one year old. A one-year-old fish can range from three to twenty inches depending on the species. Walleye yearlings average from six to twelve inches.
Adult - Adult fish are fish that have reached maturity. Depending on the species, maturity can be reached at two years of age. Walleye reach maturity between the ages of four and six years.
These fish consumption guidelines help people make choices about which fish to eat and how often. Following the guidelin es enables people to reduce their exposure to contaminants while still enjoying the many benefits from fish.

DOWID - MN DNR, Divion of Waters' lake ID number.
Contaminants listed were measured at levels that trigger advice to limit consumption.
Listing of consumption guidelines do not imply the fish are legal to keep, MN DNR fishing regulations should be consulted.

PCBS - Polychlorinated biphenyls
PFOS - Perfluorooctane sulfanate
Hyland is a shallow, productive, 84-acre lake located in Bloomington. It is surrounded by the Hyland Lake Park Reserve operated by the Three Rivers Park District. There is an accessible fishing pier and boat launch, though gas-motorized boats are not allowed to operate on the lake. Originally Hyland Lake was a wetland that experienced annual winterkills, however water levels were raised by an earthen dike and aeration was installed to create a permanent fishery. Despite these efforts, the lake has experienced a partial winterkill in 1989-90 due to equipment malfunction and has experienced partial summerkills due to abundant curly-leaf pondweed. This lake is primarily managed for largemouth bass and bluegill, yet it also contains some black crappie and walleye.
Historically bluegill have dominated the fish community. In the 2008 population assessment, bluegill were again the most abundant species. Trap nets caught an average of 125 per lift, which is over 12 times higher than the median net catch for similar lakes in the state. The average length was 6.1 inches with the largest fish reaching 7.4 inches, 58% were 6 inches or longer. Ages 2 through 8 were represented in the sample, 59% were either age 4 or 5. Growth was somewhat slower than average for metro lakes until age 5, then it increased slightly to above average.
Passive sampling gears, such as trap nets and gill nets, are not effective methods for collecting largemouth bass, so the data presented for this species is not indicative of relative abundance. Electrofishing is the typical method for largemouth bass assessments but was not conducted during this survey. That said, only 2 largemouth bass were collected during the 2008 assessment measuring 13.7 inches and 1.3 pounds and 16.9 inches and 2.8 pounds.
Black crappie were sampled in moderately low abundance, at a rate 3 per gill net and 3 per trap net, which is similar to the 2002 assessment (5.5 per gill net, 1 per trap net). Ages 2 through 4 were represented in the sample; 42% were age 3 and 29% were age 4. Growth of black crappie was near average compared to other class similar lakes in the West Metro Area.
Walleye have been stocked in Hyland Lake on an alternate year basis since 2004, including fingerlings in 2008. Walleye abundance was low; seven were sampled averaging 18.4 inches and 2.1 pounds. Five of the walleye sampled were age 5 and one was age 6, these fish are likely from the 135 adults stocked in 2006. The remaining walleye was age 4, from the original 2004 stocking.
Additional fish species sampled in low abundance were black bullhead, golden shiner, hybrid sunfish, and white sucker.
