Stocking Fish Sizes
Fry - Newly hatched fish that are ready to be stocked usually called "swim-ups". Walleye fry are 1/3 of an inch or around 8 mm.
Fingerling - Fingerlings are one to six months old and can range from a size of one to twelve inches depending on the species. Walleye fingerlings range from three to eight inches each fall.
Yearling - Yearling fish are at least one year old. A one-year-old fish can range from three to twenty inches depending on the species. Walleye yearlings average from six to twelve inches.
Adult - Adult fish are fish that have reached maturity. Depending on the species, maturity can be reached at two years of age. Walleye reach maturity between the ages of four and six years.

Status of the Fishery (as of 05/29/2003)

Dan Lake is in Ecological Lake Class 9, which consists of 48 lakes in northeast Minnesota that are very small and have very soft (unmineralized) water. Dan Lake has harder (more mineralized) water than most of the lakes in this lake class. Dan Lake thermally stratifies in midsummer and retains good oxygen for trout (more than 5 ppm) to a depth of 15-20 ft. Winter oxygen levels are good.

Dan Lake has no inlets or outlets. Aquatic plants are sparse and grow to a depth of 10 ft; most are in concentrations in the muck bays at the east and west ends of the lake. Shoal water substrates are mostly muck, ledgerock, and boulder.

The initial Fisheries lake survey in 1983 found only minnows in Dan Lake. Brook trout have been stocked annually since 1983. The 2003 assessment consisted of two gillnets set early in the spring. Trapnets were not used due to the difficult portage access. One previous trout assessment was done in 1999.

Two brook trout were captured in the 2003 assessment. One was 7" and was from the fingerling stocking the previous fall. The other was 13" and was likely from the 2001 fingerling stocking. Both had invertebrates in their stomachs. The total catch of trout by weight in 2003 of 0.5 lb/gillnet was lower than the 1999 assessment catch of 4.2 lb/gillnet and was lower than the median catch of 4.6 lb/gillnet in recent assessments of 25 stream trout lakes (excluding mine pit lakes) in the Tower Fisheries Management Area.
