How to Use AniMap
Locating common animal species
Through homepage search:
From the home page select common name or scientific name. Then click on the first letter of the animal you are interested in. Select the animal from the pulldown list and select "Go". Remember that several common names start with descriptors like "American" or "Northern" (e.g. American Robin).
Through interactive map: To get to the interactive map, select the map of the animal group you would like to map from the home page. Then select an animal to map from the drop down menu. Select a unit to map the data by and then hit the refresh tool to refresh the map.
View animal lists
Select a unit to create an animal list by and a unit to map by. Use the interface icons or place search to navigate to your area of interest. Then use the species list tool to click on the area of the map that you would like an animal list for. Your list will be created in a new window, which will remain open. Future lists will be created in this window. You may sort your list alphabetically or taxonomically by clicking on 'Common Name,' 'Scientific Name,' 'Group,' or 'Taxonomic sort order.' If no species were found or no surveys were conducted, a blank list is created.

Place Searches
Use AniMap to quickly display a specific place in Minnesota. Do this in one of three ways:
- By name: simply type in the name of a town, lake or park in Minnesota and we'll search our database of more than 29,000 places. A small popup window will show you matches and you can zoom to a place by clicking on its name.
- By public land survey (PLS): enter the township, range and, optionally, the section you'd like to display. The format to conduct a PLS search is TxxxRxx(Sxx). Examples: T100R44 and 44r16s5.
- By coordinate: enter an x y pair, separated by a space, and you'll zoom to that point. Supported coordinate types are UTM (zone 15, nad83) and lon/lat.
* About the Animal Data: AniMap only displays information on common animals found by MCBS and does not contain information gathered by other agencies. Absence of an animal does not necessarily mean that it does not occur in the area. Data for additional areas will be added to AniMap as they become available.
