Description:

Malmberg Prairie, situated within the southern basin of the ancient Glacial Lake Agassiz, is one of the last undisturbed tracts in this intensively farmed area. Bison once roamed on this very sod, among the big and little bluestem, the mat muhly, and the cordgrass. The poorly drained silt and clay soils support both mesic and wet prairie plant communities. Rare animal species on the site include prairie vole, white-tailed jack rabbit, and sharp-tailed sparrow. Short-eared owl and LeConte's sparrow can also be found. Maximilian's sunflower, Heath's aster, wild prairie rose, northern bedstraw, and closed gentians color the prairie. The best time to visit is late summer when asters, goldenrods, sunflowers, and blazing stars are in bloom. *indicates ownership in part or in whole by The Nature Conservancy.
