Description:
Hemlock Ravine is an old growth northern hardwoods, white pine,
and eastern hemlock forest site. This is the extreme western range the
hemlock, which is considered very rare in Minnesota. More than 25
percent of the state's hemlock trees occur on this site, which is centered
on a steep ravine along a small spring-fed stream. These highly erodable
slopes are subject to wash-outs and disturbance by visitors, thus
endangering the hemlocks. For this reason, the ravine is designated a sanctuary. A deer exclosure
protects young hemlock seedlings on the east slope of the stream. The best time to visit the site is in
the spring to view blooming trillium, hepatica, bloodroot, and dutchman's breeches, as well as the
hemlocks. A permit is necessary to enter the sanctuary.
