Description:
Mulligan Lake, a patterned peatland near the western edge of its range, has no bog development at all. Its several water tracks exhibit all patterned fen features, however, including ribbed fens, tear-drop islands, and the net-like reticulate flark pattern. This is a land of tamarack, bog birch, conifer swamps, and carpets of feather moss. Sandhill cranes, Wilson's phalaropes, and yellow rails are common bird species. Rare mosses, sundews, and dragon's mouth grow in the sedge fen, and four-angled water lilies bloom in Lost Lake, Mulligan Lake, and the Roseau River. A portion of this area was donated in memory of Christopher D. Curry, from Dennis M. Curry and Patti M. Curry, and of Ben Faus, Sr., from Ben and Susan Faus. * The Wetland Conservation Act of 1991 legislatively established the boundaries of the Peatland SNA as displayed. The acreage of land within these boundaries is cited first. The acreage of land owned by the State of Minnesota is cited in parenthesis.
