Type: Prairie Grasslands

ECS Subsection: Minnesota River Prairie

Description:

Along the banks of Sedan Brook is found one of the very few prairies over ten acres remaining in this part of the state. Most of central Minnesota's prairies have been converted to farmland. This extremely rare natural community is the best example of mesic blacksoil prairie left in Stearns County. Common wildflowers found here include death camas, wood lily, meadow golden-alexanders, gayfeather, flat-topped aster and sky-blue aster. Rare plants such as the small white lady's-slipper also find room to grow here. Other natural communities surrounding the prairie are cattail marsh, rich fen and wet meadow. Forty acres of this site were donated as a gift and dedicated as the Sarah Vest Memorial Unit.
