Description:
An old-growth maple-basswood forest dominates this long, narrow island. Large patches of Canada yew carpet the forest floor in many places. Because deer heavily browse Canada yew, large patches are uncommon. The exception is on steep slopes and islands such as this one, where deer are less able to get to the yew. Large northern white cedar and bur oak join with the maple and basswood form the majority of the canopy trees. Shrubs and small trees include choke cherry, ironwood, leatherwood and mountain maple. Look for wildflowers such as wild sarsaparilla, zig-zag goldenrod, lopseed, Canada mayflower, red baneberry, and false Solomon's seal alongside ferns like lady fern and rattlesnake fern.
