Description:
Myhr Creek Ridge SNA straddles a 4-square mile bedrock hill overlooking Lake Superior. Patches of exposed bedrock dot the ridge, and where soils are present, they are typically extremely shallow and dry, a consequence of, and contributor to, the site's active fire history. Shallow soils over bedrock dry quickly, making the vegetation they support more fire prone than on the deeper, organic soils along the lower slopes of the ridge near CR69. Fires also consume forest litter that contributes to soil formation. The most recent fires are thought to have swept the ridge in 1894 (Hinckley Fire year), 1908, and 1918 (Cloquet Fire year), leading to the site?s present mosaic of fire-dependent plant communities found at only one other site in the North Shore Highlands. These high-quality, fire-dependent plant communities include several woodland communities and Northern Dry Rock Outcrop. Look for the signature trees of these plant communities, scattered jack pine in excess of 100 years old, whose form and character speak to the harsh site conditions. This site was a gift from The Trust for Public Lands.
