Seasonal Update

Water: Campground water is off for the season.

Drinking Water: Water is available year-around at the park office and seasonally in the campground and day use area.

Bathroom Facilities: The campground bathroom building is being demolished / rebuilt. Vault toilets in the park are available year-round.

Showers: The shower building is being demolished / rebuilt.

Dump Station: The dump station is closed for the winter.


Campgrounds: Winter camping is no longer available at McCarthy Beach. The campgrounds closed on November 23rd and reopen on April 1st or when the snow melts. Please check with park staff regarding snow conditions if planning a spring trip.

Electric Sites: The park has 21 electric sites. These typically book a year in advance for the peak summer season.

Special Notes for RV Campers: The campground has narrow roads with sharp turns; may not be suitable for some large RVs.

Reservations: Highly recommended during the summer. All sites are first-come, first-served during late fall and spring.


Contact Notes: There are no regular office hours in the winter, but the office will be open when staff is available. If you leave a message at 218-254-7979 we can arrange a time to meet you. Mornings are the best time to reach us by phone.


Trail Notes: McCarthy Beach has 18 miles of hiking trails, 17 miles of mountain bike trails and 12 miles of horse trails. The park has 9 miles of cross-country trails and 12 miles of groomed snowmobile trails available in the winter. The park snowmobile trails connect to the Taconite State Trail and the Tim Corey trail. Non-heated trail shelters are available. Snowshoeing is permitted anywhere in the park except on groomed ski trails.

Season Rentals: The park rents canoes, kayaks, and row boats for $15/4 hrs or $25/day. A paddle boat is available to rent for $5 per hour with a $10 minimum. Two stand-up paddleboards are available to rent for $10 per hour. Rental season is Memorial Day to Labor Day. The picnic shelter in the park can be rented for $35/day in 2014 and $45/day in 2015. Call the park to reserve. No winter rentals at this park.
