Field Notes: Mystery Mussel
A previously unrecorded mussel species was found in Pelican Lake last summer during a Minnesota Statewide Mussel Survey. While it's probably not new to science, the mussel is new to Minnesota researchers. That's exciting news, says DNR mussel biologist Bernard Sietman. "It means new discoveries are waiting to be found," he says.
Preliminary DNA analysis of the mystery mussel confirmed it to be a floater mussel, but the exact species still hasn't been identified. The mystery mussel was also found in some lakes within the Rainy River, Mississippi River headwaters, and Lake Superior watersheds.
"In Minnesota, many mussel species have been lost," says Sietman. "The more we know about mussels, the better decisions we can make. And as any angler will tell you, mussels are important to aquatic ecosystems. Fishing over a mussel bed is a recipe for success."
