Lead fishing tackle can poison loons, eagles, and other wildlife. Since 1999 the Pollution Control Agency and the DNR have offered an educational program called Get the Lead Out to introduce alternative tackle materials such as tin, bismuth, steel, tungsten, and glass. Now nonlead tackle kits are available.
Created in partnership with the nonprofit Recycled Fish, the SAFE angling kit is loaded with lead-free sinkers and lures, biodegradable molded lures and floats, circle hooks, and cam-action single hooks. To find retailers and purchase the kit, visit Recycled Fish.
