I.
A copy of the coverage 'rechcond' was made, and the attribute 'senrating' was added to the polygon attribute table. 'senrating' values were calculated based on combinations of values from the attribute, 'code.' Reading the metadata for 'rechcond' would be very helpful in understanding this coverage. See Entity and Attribute Information (below) for an explanation of 'senrating' values for this coverage.

  • Polygons with 'code' value of 'sh_aq' (Depth-to-bedrock less than 50 ft.) were given a 'senrating' value of 'VH..'
  • Polygons with 'code' value of 'sh_dpg' (Eroded Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit with less than 50 ft of cover) were given a 'senrating' value of 'H.'
  • Polygons with 'code' value of 'bur_dp' (Eroded Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit with greater than 50 ft. of cover) or 'mod' (Thick Des Moines till) were given a 'senrating' value of 'M.'
  • Polygons with 'code' value of 'low' was given a 'senrating' value of 'L.'
  • Polygons with 'code' value of 'dpg' (Non-eroded DPG confining unit) were given a 'senrating' value of 'VL.'

Next, selected polygons from the surficial geology coverage made by the Minnesota Geological Survey were added using the arc 'union' command. Polygons within Webster, Forest, Wells, and Shieldsville townships or within the North Fork of the Zumbro River basin were not included, because Moira Campion considered them unimportant to bedrock pollution sensitivity. Outside of these areas, polygons with the following mgscode values are included in this selection:

    443001 - Organic deposits
    443002 - Alluvium
    443006 - Older alluvium
    443102 - Outwash (Des Moines)
    443104 - Till (Des Moines)
    443500 - Supraglacial till
    443521 - Stream sediment buried by till
    443527 - Collapsed outwash
    443528 - Collapsed till

All of these polygons were given a sensitivity rating of 'H' - High sensitivity. This designation overrode all others whenever there was a conflict.

III.
Finally, the coverage was dissolved (arc 'dissolve') on the item 'senrating.'
