The GIS components of the Sensitivity Map are examined separately in figure 3 of Plate 9. The Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit (Decorah Plateau outline) was extracted from the MGS ? BGNT coverage with the edge of the plateau represented by the lower contact of the Decorah Formation. The inner edge of the eroded portion of this confining was estimated with help from the Water Table Depth map on Plate 8. The shallow water table conditions were considered indicators of continuous confining unit conditions ? the deeper water table conditions were thought to represent the eroded edge (orange fringe of figure 3b).

The till thickness components shown in figures 3c and 3d were derived from the MGS ? DTLN coverage. These line files were converted to polygon files. The alluvium polygons from MGS coverage SPPG were subtracted spatially from the drift thickness polygons leaving a file that mostly represents till thickness. The till thickness file was separated into 5-50 foot ranges (shown on figure 3c) and greater than 50 foot ranges (shown of figure 3d). The thin till (5-50 foot) that overlapped the eroded edge of the Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit was colored yellow, the remainder was colored orange (figure 3c). The portion of the thick till (>50 feet)that covers the eroded edge was colored light green and the remainder was colored yellow. The sensitivity map was created by overlaying the components maps shown in figure 3 in reverse order.

Finally the outwash or colluvium and alluvium overlay coverages were derived from the MGS ? SGPG file.

Sensitivity interpretation was based on overlapping estimated time of travel ranges as follows:

Red - - Very High - - Hours to months
Orange - - High - - Weeks to years
Yellow - - Moderate - - Years to decades
Light green - - Low - - Decades to a century
Dark green - - Very Low - - A century or more
