Lineage

This file is a representation of the thickness between the top of the OT aquifer and the base of the first recharge surface (see recharge surface 1, Figure 3, Plate 9). Recharge surface 1 was calculated by the two expressions (used in the spatial analyst environment of ArcGIS 9):

[pope_ls_DEM]-[surfsdthick3] = rechargesurf

which calculates the land surface DEM minus a thickness DEM of the surface sand (Plate 6).

And:

con(isnull([lgbot4_spl]), con(([rechargesurf] - [otbot_spl]) <= 10, [rechargesurf] - ([rechargesurf] - [otbot_spl]) ,[rechargesurf]),con(([rechargesurf] - [lgbot4_spl]) <= 10, [rechargesurf] - ([rechargesurf] - [lgbot4_spl]),[rechargesurf]))

where lgbot4_spl is an elevation grid file of the overlying till layer in the western two thirds of the county. This expression has two parts: 1) if no Lower Goose River group till exists (in the eastern one-third of the county) and the Otter Tail River group is <= 10 feet thick then the result is the top of the Crow Wing River group, otherwise the result is rechargesurf. 2) if the Lower Goose River group is present (in the western two thirds of the county) and if the till thickness above the OT sand layer is <= 10 feet then the result is the top of the OT sand layer, otherwise the result is rechargesurf.

The sensitivity rating model, based on the thickness of the protective layer between the aquifer and the nearest overlying recharge surface, is described in Figure 5 of Plate 9. Sensitivity ratings are applied as follows:
Protective layer thickness - - Sensitivity Rating
0 to 10 feet - - Very High
10 to 20 feet - - High
20 to 30 feet - - Moderate
30 to 40 feet - - Low
Greater than 40 feet - - Very Low

The final raster was converted to a polygon shapefile.

Sensitivity interpretation was based on overlapping estimated time of travel ranges as follows:

Red - - Very High - - Hours to months
Orange - - High - - Weeks to years
Yellow - - Moderate - - Years to decades
Light green - - Low - - Decades to a century
Dark green - - Very Low - - A century or more
