Abstract ArcGIS shapefiles depicting a variety of characteristics of the ground water system of Pope County, Minnesota
Purpose Geographic information systems (GIS) layers were created to cartographically depict and spatially analyze data used in the production of the Pope County Geologic Atlas, Part B.

A County Geologic Atlas (CGA) is a systematic study of a county's geologic and ground-water resources. Geologic studies include both near-surface deposits and bedrock. Ground-water studies include flow systems, aquifer capacity, ground-water chemistry, and sand and gravel deposits. Interpretation of sensitivity to pollution is also part of a CGA.

Lineage Review of available data:
Investigations begin with a review of existing information, such as earlier geologic maps, soil maps, hydrologic reports, and information provided by well drillers. Minnesota Geological Survey staff review and interpret driller's logs, and enter the data into the County Well Index (CWI), an interactive data base of water-well information.

Collection of data from the field:
Field studies are conducted to measure static water level elevations and chemistry of selected wells. These studies, combined with pre-existing data, are used to create models of water-table and bedrock hydrogeology (elevation, potentiometric surface, potential yield, flow direction), and sensitivity of ground water system to pollution.

Creation of GIS layers:
Using a variety of techniques, data are converted into ArcGIS shapefiles, grids, or feature classes for cartographic display and spatial analysis. Metadata for individual layers contain more detailed lineage information.

Entity and Attribute Overview The Pope County Geologic Atlas, Part B consists of 19 separate GIS data layers divided into four plates:

Plate 6 - Hydrogeology of the Surficial Aquifers
Plate 7 - Hydrogeology of the Buried Aquifers
Plate 8 - Hydrogeologic Cross Sections
Plate 9 - Sensitivity to Pollution of the Buried Aquifers
