Lineage

Sensitivity calculations were made for the top of each buried sand and gravel aquifer by comparing it to the deepest recharge surface. The elevation of the top of the buried sand and gravel aquifers are from the top of the buried sand and gravel units published with the elevation data in Part A. The top of the bedrock is from the bedrock topography data from Part A that was provided by the MGS.

Recharge surfaces were calculated from the land surface down to each mapped buried sand and gravel aquifer, starting with the stratigraphically shallowest sand and gravel aquifer and ending with the stratigraphically deepest sand and gravel aquifer and the top of the bedrock surface. In Carver County there are seven units to consider in a sensitivity calculation, the six buried sand and gravel aquifers and the top of the bedrock surface.

The pollution sensitivity maps are primarily based on the depth to the top of the mapped aquifers. Plate 4, Part A includes maps of the depth to the top of the buried sand and gravel aquifers. Plate 5, Part A includes a map of the depth to the bedrock surface. The fine-grained sediment between aquifers is assumed to act as an aquitard that restricts the vertical movement of groundwater between aquifers. Plate 9 has a complete description of the development of the sensitivity model.

The sensitivity rating matrix, based on the thickness of the protective layer between the aquifer unit and the nearest overlying recharge surface, is described in Figure 5, Plate 9. Sensitivity ratings are applied as follows:
